Why do we celebrate Earth Day?
Since the first Earth Day in 1970, April 22nd has become a day of international support to raise awareness for environmental protection. There’s so much we can do, from planting new trees, reducing our reliance on plastics, and protecting the world’s natural resources. Today, the Earth Day Network celebrates how far we have come, bringing together over 20,000 partners in 190 countries on a mission all year round to pursue a sustainable environment.
A snapshot of 2023
2023 was a year of highs and lows when it comes to protecting the Earth; here is a round-up of some of the biggest environmental news.
2023 was declared the hottest year on record
The year saw an average temperature of 0.13% higher than 2016, which was the last hottest year on record.
Enough renewable energy to power every home in the UK
A big win was that hydro, solar and wind installations produced over 90 terawatt hours of energy, increasing by 20-25% each quarter in 2023. This was enough energy to power the UK’s 28 million homes!
New electric vehicle sales went up by 45% in Ireland
Reflecting a shift in the collective mindset regarding car purchases, electric, plug-in and hybrid vehicles now make up 45.5% of the market in Ireland.
These milestones echo a vital message to remember this Earth Day: while amazing progress is being made, more must be done to ensure a sustainable future.

What do we do to take care of our Earth?
At Panda, our mission has remained the same since our first step: to create luxurious products that do not cost the Earth. We champion a slow and sustainable approach to innovation, which started with a long search to discover the perfect fabric for our world-loved bedding and home collections. We found it: bamboo!
The wonder plant is one of the planet’s most sustainable resources, providing an abundance of natural benefits – hypoallergenic, thermoregulating and indulgently soft, to name just a few.
Innovating with bamboo has led to incredible developments. Here are a few of our key milestones from 2023.
BioCell Foam™
In 2023, we launched our first Hybrid Bamboo Mattress – the world’s most breathable mattress with six layers of revolutionary comfort and support. The star of the show? Our bamboo-infused foam, which optimises airflow and counteracts memory foam’s natural heat retention. To learn more about this leading innovation, click here.
CharcoCell Foam™
2023 also marked the launch of our Hybrid Bamboo Pillow, the core innovation being our CharcoCell Foam™. The bamboo-charcoal-infused foam maximises airflow for a cool and breathable night’s sleep. To discover more about our CharcoCell Foam™, head here.
Signature+™ Bedding Collection
And that brings us to now. To celebrate Earth Day 2024, we are launching our purest, most luxurious Bamboo Bedding Collection. Our Signature+™ collection is made with bamboo lyocell. The closed-loop production process is entirely chemical-free, saving water and providing you with the softest, ultra-durable, most eco-friendly bedding. This Earth Day, treat yourself to one of our nature-inspired colours, keeping you sleeping kindly, night after night.
Other ways we play our part
Circle of Life Programme
We collect all memory foam products at the end of use, ensuring they do not contribute to landfills and continue to have a whole other life. Our white-glove mattress delivery service includes free collection and responsible disposal of old mattresses too, so you can sit back and relax.
Recyclable Packaging
All of our packaging is made from kraft paper, a 100% biodegradable and natural product. The pulp is made from long virgin fibres of maritime pine, which is not bleached – so there is minimal chemical processing. This method gives the paper its unique colour, retaining the natural wood texture.
Just like tree leaves, kraft paper is naturally biodegradable. Within a few weeks, the paper decomposes naturally, returning to its normal form of cellulose fibres. These fibres can be fully assimilated back into their natural environment with no impact on the surrounding wildlife.
Giving Back
We donate $1 for every Panda pillow or bedding set purchased worldwide to the WWF foundation in order to help preserve wild pandas’ at-risk habitat, making a genuine difference to their livelihoods with your help.
How can you make a difference in our world in 2024?
Are you looking to get stuck into helping take care of our Earth this year? Be inspired by some of these small ways you can make a big difference.
Shop Sustainably
Making the effort to ensure the shops you choose to buy your clothes, groceries, and bedding from are eco-friendly can make a big difference to the planet. Often, these brands recycle and minimise their carbon footprint, using natural resources wherever possible.
Walk More
Getting your steps in instead of taking a car or an Uber can go a long way to reducing carbon emissions and pollution that harms the atmosphere.
Litter Collection
Looking for an eco-friendly hobby to pick up on the weekends? Keep an eye out for local groups that run litter collections to help clear up our beaches, develop a planet-friendly community and keep the world beautiful.
Eat More Plants
Now is a great time to start incorporating more juicy fruits and veggies into your diet; not only will they make you feel great, but they can also help reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, save water, and decrease pollutants in our soil.
